Money Matters

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including for small purchases, so carrying large amounts of cash isn't necessary. Remember that sales tax is added at checkout rather than shown in listed prices, and it varies by state and city.

Tipping is a genuine expectation, not an optional extra — 15–20% at sit-down restaurants, a dollar or two per drink at bars, and small tips for hotel staff, taxi/rideshare drivers and hairdressers.

Getting Around

Distances between cities are frequently much larger than first-time visitors expect — check driving times before assuming a day trip is feasible. Public transport quality varies dramatically by city, so research your specific destination's options rather than assuming.

In car-dependent cities (much of the South, Southwest, and Los Angeles), renting a car is genuinely the most practical option rather than a luxury.

Etiquette and Culture

Small talk with service staff, strangers in queues, or fellow diners is common and generally welcomed rather than intrusive. Portion sizes at restaurants tend to be large by international standards, and asking for a box to take leftovers home is completely normal.

Personal space expectations are slightly larger than in some other cultures, particularly in queues and public seating.

The USA is generally safe for tourists exercising normal precautions, though safety can vary block by block within the same city — a little research on your specific neighborhood before booking accommodation is worthwhile.

Healthcare without insurance is extremely expensive — comprehensive travel insurance covering medical costs is strongly recommended for any USA trip.
