Before You Go

Most international visitors need either a visa or, for eligible countries under the Visa Waiver Program, an approved ESTA before travelling to the USA — apply for either well in advance, ideally at least a few weeks before departure.

Check your passport's expiry date; while the USA doesn't require the common 6-month rule some countries do, it's good practice to travel with a passport valid well beyond your trip dates.

Money and Tipping

Tipping is expected in the USA, typically 15–20% at sit-down restaurants, a dollar or two per drink at bars, and small amounts for hotel staff and rideshare drivers. Card payments are accepted almost everywhere, including small purchases.

Sales tax is added at checkout rather than included in listed prices, and varies by state and even city — so the price on the shelf isn't the price you'll pay at the register.

Safety and Practicalities

The USA is generally safe for tourists who take normal city precautions — stick to well-lit, busy areas at night in unfamiliar cities, and be aware that safety can vary block by block within the same city.

Emergency services can be reached by dialing 911. Travel insurance is strongly recommended, as healthcare costs without insurance can be extremely high.

Getting Around

Distances between cities are often much larger than visitors expect — flying or taking a long-distance train is usually more practical than driving between major regions unless a road trip is the point of the visit.

Public transport quality varies significantly by city — excellent in New York, limited in car-dependent cities like Los Angeles or Orlando, where a rental car is genuinely useful.
