Planning Your Trip
The USA is too large to see in one trip, so the first step is choosing a region rather than trying to 'do' the whole country. Popular first-time approaches include an East Coast city trip (New York, D.C., Boston), a West Coast road trip (California), or a national parks loop through the Southwest.
Decide on your priorities early — cities, nature, beaches or theme parks — since trying to combine all four usually means too much time spent travelling between them.
Getting Around the Country
Domestic flights are the most practical way to cover long distances between regions, while trains (Amtrak) work well for shorter regional hops, especially in the Northeast. Renting a car is often the best option for exploring a single region in depth, particularly national parks and smaller towns.
Public transport quality varies enormously by city — excellent in New York and Chicago, limited in car-dependent cities like Los Angeles, Orlando, and most of the South.
When to Visit
Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer the best weather across most of the country, with fewer crowds and lower prices than summer. Summer remains peak season everywhere, especially for families travelling during school holidays.
Regional exceptions matter — winter is ideal for the South and Southwest, while summer is the only realistic window for high-altitude national parks like Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain.
Practical Basics
Most international visitors need a visa or an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program before travel — apply well ahead of your trip. Tipping (15–20% at restaurants) is expected, and sales tax is added at checkout rather than included in displayed prices.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended given the high cost of healthcare in the USA without coverage.
