The National Mall

The National Mall is the heart of a D.C. visit — a two-mile stretch connecting the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol, flanked by most of the Smithsonian museums. It's entirely walkable, though the distance end to end (and the number of museums along the way) means most visitors need more than one day to cover it properly.

Early morning or evening visits to the memorials avoid both crowds and heat, and several (like the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials) are especially striking when lit up at night.

Free Museums

Nearly all Smithsonian museums (Air and Space, Natural History, American History, and more) are free to enter, making D.C. one of the best-value major city destinations in the country. The National Gallery of Art, also free, sits just off the Mall and is easy to combine with a Smithsonian visit.

Popular museums like Air and Space and the National Museum of African American History and Culture sometimes require free timed-entry passes, especially during peak season — check availability before your visit.

Best Time to Visit

Late March to early April is D.C.'s most famous season, when the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin bloom — book accommodation well ahead, as this is the city's busiest period. Fall (September–October) offers similarly pleasant weather with far fewer crowds.

Summer is hot and humid, and Congress typically breaks for August recess, which can mean quieter (but still hot) museum visits.

Beyond the Mall

Georgetown offers a change of pace with cobblestone streets, boutique shopping and waterfront dining, a short cab or scooter ride from downtown. Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac in Virginia, is a moving and worthwhile half-day addition to any itinerary.

D.C.'s metro system is efficient and makes day trips to nearby Alexandria or Mount Vernon straightforward without needing a car.
