The Strip: What to Expect
Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as the Strip, is a 4-mile stretch of themed mega-resorts — from the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris to the pyramid at Luxor and the fountains at Bellagio. Walking the full Strip end to end takes a couple of hours, so most visitors base themselves centrally and explore a few casinos on foot each evening.
Beyond gambling, Vegas has reinvented itself as a food, show and nightlife destination — Michelin-starred restaurants, residencies from major music artists, and world-class shows like Cirque du Soleil sit alongside the casino floors.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) offer the most comfortable weather, with daytime temperatures in the 20s°C. Summer regularly hits 40°C+ and, while pool parties thrive in the heat, walking the Strip becomes uncomfortable by midday.
Hotel rates fluctuate heavily with conventions and weekends — booking a Sunday–Thursday stay can save significantly compared to a Friday–Saturday visit.
Day Trips from Vegas
The Grand Canyon (South Rim, about 4.5 hours by car, or a shorter helicopter/small-plane tour) and the closer West Rim (about 2.5 hours, with the glass Skywalk) are the most popular day trips. Zion National Park and the Hoover Dam are also within a few hours' drive.
Red Rock Canyon, just 20 minutes from the Strip, is a good option if you only have half a day free and want a taste of the desert landscape.
Budgeting for Vegas
Resort fees (charged per night on top of the room rate) and parking fees at most Strip hotels catch first-time visitors off guard — factor these into your budget. Buffets and shows can be booked in advance at a discount through official resort websites rather than walk-up prices.
Free entertainment — the Bellagio fountains, the Venetian's canals, and simply walking the Strip at night — means Vegas can work on a range of budgets, not just high-rollers.
